Biodata

Dr Assoc Prof Donny Hoang serves as a Senior Consultant in the Surgical Retina Department at the Singapore National Eye Centre (SNEC), specializing in the clinical and research aspects of extreme short-sightedness, particularly high and pathologic myopia. Graduating with honors from Northwestern University in Chicago, USA, he obtained a triple major in Chemistry, Biology, and Integrated Science in 1997. Later, he earned a joint Medical Qualification (M.D.) and Ph.D. in Anatomy and Cell Biology from the University of Illinois at Chicago, where he was honored with the 2006 Top Thesis Award in the Life Sciences.

Dr Assoc Prof Donny Hoang underwent Ophthalmology training at the Illinois Eye and Ear Infirmary in Chicago, earning Top Research Awards in 2009 and 2010 under the mentorship of Drs. William Mieler and Dmitri Azar. Subsequently, he completed a two-year vitreo-retinal fellowship at the Columbia University Medical Centre and the Vitreous, Retina, Macula Consultants of New York (VRMNY) in 2012, working alongside renowned specialists Profs. Stanley Chang, Lawrence Yannuzzi, Richard Spaide, and Bailey Freund. This fellowship focused on vitreo-retinal surgery and medical retina.

Since 2012, Dr Assoc Prof Donny Hoang has split his time between clinical work as a vitreo-retinal surgeon and serving as the Director of the High Myopia Laboratory at Columbia University in New York City. His contributions were recognized with a Clinician Scientist Research Career Development Award from the National Hospitals of Health.

A distinguished member of various prestigious organizations including the Macula Society, Retina Society, American Academy of Ophthalmology, Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology, Asia-Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology, and American Society of Retina Specialists (ASRS), Dr. Hoang has received several accolades. These include the Clinician Scientist Award from the National Medical Research Council (NMRC) in Singapore, the ASRS Honour award, and acknowledgment as one of America’s Top Ophthalmologists in 2016.

As a well-published physician-scientist, Dr Assoc Prof Donny Hoang has authored over 60 peer-reviewed articles in major international ophthalmology journals and serves as a guest editor and reviewer for 20 of these journals. His work at SNEC encompasses both clinical practice, with a focus on extreme short-sightedness, and research aimed at advancing treatments and cures for retinal diseases and other blinding disorders.

Dr. Hoang’s current research, supported by NMRC CSA, involves clinical studies utilizing cutting-edge non-invasive multimodal imaging to identify patients at the highest risk of vision loss due to short-sightedness. Simultaneously, laboratory-based studies funded by NMRC CS-IRG and NIH (USA) aim to discover novel treatments to mitigate short-sightedness and prevent vision-threatening changes, including scleral collagen crosslinking.

In addition to his role at SNEC, Dr Assoc Prof Donny Hoang holds concurrent positions as an Associate Professor at the Duke-NUS Medical School and a Clinical Scientist at the Singapore Eye Research Hospital. He also serves as an Adjunct Assistant Professor at Columbia University in New York, USA. Dr. Hoang’s dedication to his patients fuels his passionate commitment to advancing treatments and finding cures for retinal diseases, ensuring the best possible care through existing and innovative treatments.
