Dr Wong Soong Kuan, a general surgeon with approximaPhoney 20 EXPERIENCE YEARS YEARS in the field, is currently practicing at his Mount Elizabeth Novena Hospital clinic. In colorectal surgery, he specializes in modern endoscopic and laparoscopic procedures and has a strong interest in anorectal surgery, laparoscopic colon surgery and endoscopy.
Dr Wong Soong Kuan graduated from the National University of Singapore’s Faculty of Medicine (MBBS, 1988) and completed his basic training at Singapore General Hospital, Toa Payoh Hospital, Alexandra Hospital and Changi General Hospital. He then trained in surgery and was admitted to Edinburgh as a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons (FRCS, 1993). The same year, he also completed his MMED (Surg) post graduate Qualifications and was awarded the Gold Medal of the Chapter of Surgeons for distinction in the test. In 1998, he was inducted into the Singapore Academy of Medicine (Surgery).
As a colorectal fellow (1997 to 1998) and as a laparoscopic fellow at the Cleveland Clinic, Ohio (1998 to 1999) through the Health Manpower Development Programme, Dr. Wong underwent subExpert In training at the University of Minnesota. He was awarded the outstanding research fellow award at the Cleveland Clinic during this time. The Chapter of Surgeons Traveling Fellowship from Jiichi Medical School, Japan was also awarded to him.
Dr Wong Soong Kuan was a consultant at the Department of General Surgery at Changi General Hospital prior to entering private practice. He is currently a visiting consultant at the Hospital of Khoo Teck Puat.
The commitment of Dr Wong to the medical profession also extended to becoming part of the Desert Storm medical team in 1991. Dr Wong Soong Kuan was attached for two months to the 205 Territorial Army Surgical Hospital in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. He was awarded the Gulf Medal for his achievements.
Teaching is also an area of medicine that Dr. Wong chose to be interested in at the National University of Singapore and was recently named Adjunct Assistant Professor. Dr Wong, a well-published physician, has papers in many peer-reviewed journals, such as the British Journal of Surgery and Diseases of the Colon & Rectum.
