For much of his career, Dr Toh worked at the National Cancer Centre Singapore, with a 3-year stint at the Raffles Cancer Centre, where he was director of clinical research before joining Curie Oncology. At the National Cancer Centre, he was the chief of the Lung Cancer Consortium project that organized lung cancer research in Singapore, paving the way for several publications and discoveries. He was also part of the National Medical Research Council’s Large Collaborative Grant team for ‘Next-Generation Clinical Trials and Integrative Research for Combating Lung Cancer’.

In 1995, Dr Toh Chee Keong graduated with the Gibbs Gold Medal from the National University of Singapore, followed by MRCP (UK) in 2000 and specialist accreditation in Medical Oncology in 2004. He was in the United States at the Burnham Hospital in La Jolla and Moores Cancer Centre in San Diego, under the Health Manpower Development Programme.

He was active in research work, clinical trials and teaching over the years. His published work on the clinical characteristics of lung cancer among non-smokers, one of the earliest publications during a period when the molecular characteristics of this community of patients were not yet understood, is among his many achievements. Lung cancer in non-smokers was later discovered to form a broad community in the Asian population.

Dr Toh Chee Keong was one of Singapore’s first oncologists to prescribe high-dose interleukin-2 as a type of immunotherapy treatment for melanoma and kidney cancer. Over the years, immunotherapy then switched to checkpoint inhibitors and became a staple of today’s treatment of several cancers. In several clinical trials, he led and was a co-investigator.

He was also a member of the working group on lung cancer, kidney cancer, prostate cancer and bladder cancer recommendations for the Singapore Cancer Network (SCAN). He was an assistant professor in the field of teaching at Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, NUS, and Duke-NUS Medical School.
