Biodata

Dr Thirumalai Ganesan graduated from Madras Medical College in 1984 and finished his general surgical and urology studies in 1990 and 1993, respectively. Dr Thirumalai Ganesan worked at Stanley Medical College and Govt Stanley Hospital until 1995 as an Assistant Professor. He then traveled to England for additional urological training. After earning his FRCS from the Royal College of Glasgow in Scotland, he completed his training in Endo-urology and Uro-oncology at Freeman Hospital in Newcastle upon Tyne from 1996 to 2000. He then served as a Consultant Urologist and lead clinician for Uro-oncology at Manchester Royal Infirmary, a 2000-bed teaching hospital in Manchester, England, from 2000 to 2002, following earning his FRCS (Urology) Qualification. He then returned to India and joined Apollo Hospitals in 2003 as a Consultant. The following year, he completed a preceptorship in laparoscopic urology at prestigious institutions in the United States of America, including Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Sloan Kettering Memorial Hospital in New York, Cleveland Hospital in Ohio, and Indianapolis University Hospital in Indianapolis (Indianapolis). He moved to England in 2004 to pursue a fellowship in laparoscopic urology at Cambridge’s Addenbrooke’s Hospital.
Dr Thirumalai Ganesan has delivered papers at the annual meetings of the British Association of Urological Surgeons in Harrogate and Glasgow, United Kingdom. Additionally, he has written articles for the British Journal of Urology and the Australian and New Zealand Journal of Surgery. Dr Thirumalai Ganesan has been chosen by the National Board of Examinations as one of the inspectors for training at the national level. He inspects numerous training centers throughout the country to certify the quality of training provided to learners. He pioneered minimally invasive urology at Apollo Hospitals with treatments such as percutaneous nephrolithotomy (keyhole surgery) for kidney stones, flexible ureteroscopy, and laparoscopic nephrectomy. He was the first surgeon in Tamil Nadu to undertake keyhole prostate cancer surgery. In 2011, he traveled to Indianapolis and Orlando’s Celebration Bloom for Advanced Robotic Training.
He is currently a Senior Consultant in the Department of Urology at Apollo Hospitals in Chennai. His specialties include minimally invasive urology in the treatment of stone disease, urological malignancies, and endourology.
