Dr Tan Yu Meng practices at Mount Elizabeth Hospital and Mount Elizabeth Novena Hospital, Singapore, as a general surgeon. He specializes in gastrointestinal and hepatobiliary-pancreatic diseases (liver, pancreas, bile duct and gallbladder) and peritoneal malignancy surgery for a rare abdominal tissue lining cancer. He is one of the few Asian surgeons to perform advanced peritoneal malignancy surgery.

In his 1994 Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery Qualification, Dr Tan graduated from Charing Cross and Westminster Medical School (now the Imperial College School of Medicine) with first class honors and distinction. He then studied under Professor Soo Khee Chee in general surgery at the Singapore General Hospital (SGH) and, in 1999, became a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, UK.

Dr Tan Yu Meng received further training in advanced hepatobiliary surgery and liver transplantation at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham, United Kingdom, a world-renowned liver unit. Under the guidance of Professor Koichi Tanaka in Japan, he then gained his expertise in living donor liver transplantation.

In 2005, Dr Tan was a founding member of the Singapore General Hospital’s (SGH) liver transplant team. In 2007, he was named surgical director of the SGH liver transplant program and led the team to conduct the first successful SGH liver split transplant and the first Asian hybrid heart-liver transplant in 2009.

As the former Deputy Head and Senior Consultant of the National Cancer Centre (NCC) Department of Surgical Oncology, Dr Tan Yu Meng led a multidisciplinary team to the Washington Cancer Hospital in 2009 to follow Dr. Paul Sugarbaker’s expertise in peritonectomy and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (a heated chemotherapy procedure for abdominal cancer). Dr Tan continues to be a visiting NCC counselor.

In leading surgical journals, such as the Annals of Surgery, Dr Tan has written over 90 papers on different surgical diseases.

Dr Tan Yu Meng was an examiner at the Royal College of Edinburgh, UK, and at the National University of Singapore’s Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine.
