At Mount Elizabeth Hospital, Singapore, Dr Tan Wah Siew is a general and colorectal surgeon.
Dr Tan Wah Siew interests are in minimally invasive colorectal surgery, proctology, colorectal cancer, advanced rectal cancer involving dissections of the pelvic lymph node and pelvic exenteration, and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).
She spent a year studying in Leeds, UK, gaining practical EXPERIENCE YEARS in colorectal robotic and laparoscopic surgery, difficult pelvic surgery, and pelvic exenteration.
Dr Tan Wah Siew was a senior consultant surgeon in the colorectal surgery department at Singapore General Hospital before setting up her own private practice (SGH).
Dr Tan Wah Siew conducted the inaugural robotic lateral pelvic lymph node dissection for patients with neoadjuvant chemoradiation rectal cancer, as well as the inaugural robotic pelvic exenteration for locally advanced SGH rectal cancer. Since then, using both laparoscopic and robotic methods, she has performed several minimally invasive lateral pelvic lymph node dissections.
She was one of the first female Singaporean surgeons to be qualified in robotic colorectal surgery and performed multiple minimally invasive lateral pelvic lymph node dissections (both laparoscopic and robotic) for patients with advanced rectal cancer, as well as full colon cancer mesocolic excision surgery.
To date, for both colorectal cancer and benign colorectal disorders, she has conducted more than 500 large colorectal resection operations.
At SGH, Dr Tan was also a member of the multidisciplinary IBD team and one of the surgeons. For patients with both ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease, she conducted several life-saving operations.
She is also especially interested in proctology and provides a variety of surgical options to treat haemorrhoids, anal fistulas and anal fissures.
She has provided training courses for international and local delegates as well as surgical residents on laparoscopic and endoscopic skills, and has also been involved in teaching nurses at Nanyang Polytechnic.
In various peer-reviewed journals, she has published widely, particularly on minimally invasive colorectal surgery. She has been a reviewer for several local and foreign publications, including the British Journal of Surgery, Colorectal Disease, the Singapore Medical Journal, and the International Journal of Colorectal Disease.
Since 2011, she has been a member of the Society of Colorectal Surgeons, Singapore (SCRS), and from 2014 to 2015, she was a member of its executive committee. She is also a member of the Singapore Society for Robotic Surgery.
Dr Tan has received a variety of awards, including the 2017 Service with a Heart Award and the 2020 Singapore Health Efficiency Service Award (Silver).
