Biodata
- Dr Tan Teck Wei is a consultant urologist at Tan Tock Seng Hospital and the director of genitourinary oncology (TTSH). He is also an Adjunct Assistant Professor at the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine of the National University of Singapore (NUS). He is fellowship-trained in the management of urological malignancies, including those of the bladder, prostate, kidney, and testis. Dr. Tan heads the urology tumor board, directs the MRI-targeted prostate biopsy and accelerated recovery after cystectomy programs at TTSH, and serves as the clinical champion for the robot-assisted laparoscopic prostatectomy (RALP) clinical pathway. Dr Tan Teck Wei also pioneered transperineal prostate biopsy in TTSH, which has significantly lower infection rates than regular transrectal biopsy. Dr. Tan is an outspoken advocate for patients with urological cancers, mentoring the TTSH prostate cancer support group, serving on the Singapore Cancer Society’s (SCS) Prostate Cancer Survivorship Advisory Panel, and chairing the SCS’s 2020 Prostate Cancer Awareness Campaign.
- Dr Tan Teck Wei graduated from NUS with a medical Qualification and then completed Expert In urology training at TTSH and Singapore General Hospital. Throughout his studies, he received numerous prizes, including the European Board of Urology Book Prize and the College of Surgeons Gold Medal for the best urology trainee. He then completed an advanced fellowship in robotic surgery and uro-oncology at London’s Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospitals (UK). He is the first urologist trained outside the United Kingdom to get this prestigious fellowship, which is recognized by both the Royal College of Surgeons of England and the British Association of Urological Surgeons (BAUS). Guy’s Hospital is one of the largest urological cancer centers in the United Kingdom, doing the highest number of robotic procedures. He received training in open, laparoscopic, and robotic-assisted cancer surgery, which included cystectomy, prostatectomy, intracorporeal urinary diversion, pelvic exenteration, and nephrectomy/nephroureterectomy.
- Dr Tan Teck Wei’s research interests include minimally invasive bladder and prostate cancer management, prostate cancer diagnostics, and improved post-cystectomy recovery. He was the primary author on a publication that described the country’s first and biggest series of MRI-guided prostate biopsies. As a result of the better accuracy of MRI-targeted biopsies, he serves as an advisor to the Ministry of Health’s Agency for Care Effectiveness, which is pursuing funding to make MRI-targeted prostate biopsy the standard of care in Singapore. Dr. Tan also serves as an international consulting editor for the Indian Journal of Urology and serves on the editorial boards of numerous medical journals, including the British Journal of Urology International, Prostate Cancer and Prostatic Diseases, and the Asia-Pacific Journal of Clinical Oncology. He is a core clinical faculty member of the National Healthcare Group’s (NHG) Urology Residency Program, which educates Singapore’s future urologists. Additionally, he is a Clinical Instructor at the Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine at Nanyang Technological University-Imperial College London. He has also served on the organizing committee and as a faculty member for a number of regional conferences, including the Asian Congress of Robotic and Laparoscopic Surgery, the Asian Summit on Robotic Surgery, and Urofair.
