Biography

Dr. Tan Chyn Hong graduated with an MBBS from the National University of Singapore (NUS) in 1998. He then completed a fellowship in Australia, where he received further subspecialty training in Shoulder, Knee, and Elbow, where he was also involved in treating professional athletes with sports injuries, as well as patients with degenerative conditions such as rotator cuff tears and arthritis of the shoulder and knee.

Dr. Tan has a special interest in treating shoulder, knee, and elbow problems. He pioneered the technique of arthroscopic rotator cuff shoulder surgery without implants in Singapore and was the first surgeon in Singapore to perform rotator cuff repair without using metal or plastic implants. Before moving into private practice, Dr. Tan was Chief of the Division of Sports Medicine at Hospital Universitario Nacional. His love for sports began during his school years when he was a national athlete representing Singapore at the SEA Judo Games. In his career, he continues his involvement in sports by treating injured athletes and getting athletes back on their feet as he led a team of orthopedic surgeons, sports physicians, and sports therapists to provide comprehensive medical care. His patients included national athletes in basketball, netball, canoeing, judo, taekwondo, and soccer. During his time in public service, he was part of the task force appointed by the Ministry of Health to develop national clinical practice guidelines in the treatment of knee osteoarthritis in 2007. In the same year, he was awarded the Inaugural College of Surgeons. Gold Medal from the Singapore Academy of Medicine for being the most outstanding candidate in the Royal College of Surgeons (Orthopedic Surgery) Fellowship Examination, Edinburgh. Dr. Tan’s specialty interests are implanted arthroscopic rotator cuff shoulder surgery and the treatment of shoulder, knee, and elbow problems.
