Dr Stephen Teoh Charn Beng is a Consultant Ophthalmologist who specializes in retinal surgery (retinal detachment repair, macular hole repair, diabetic vitrectomy, and diagnostic vitrectomy, among others) and medical vitreoretinal illnesses (including management of age-related macular degeneration, retinal vascular disorders, diabetic retinopathy etc.). Additionally, he is trained in the diagnosis and therapy of uveitis and ocular inflammatory illnesses, which includes immunosuppression with biologics and surgical diagnostic biopsies.
Dr Stephen Teoh Charn Beng graduated from the National University of Singapore in 1998 and finished his Ophthalmology studies with a Masters in Ophthalmology in 2003. In 2005, he was awarded Fellowships by the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (FRCSEd) and the Academy of Medicine (FAMS). In 2006, he completed dual speciality training at the Bristol Eye Hospital in the United Kingdom in vitreo-retina (surgical and medical) and uveitis, ocular immunology, and inflammation. Additionally, he completed an observership on HIV-related ocular inflammation in 2007 at the Wilmer Eye Hospital of Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, USA.
Additionally, he is proficient in Comprehensive Ophthalmology, which includes difficult cataract procedures, refractive surgery with wavefront, toric, and multifocal IOLs, and pterygium excision with conjunctival graft (fibrin glue). He continues to run uveitis and vitreoretinal clinics at Tan Tock Seng Hospital, Khoo Teck Puat Medical Centre, and the Communicable Disease Centre. Dr Teoh also served as an Ophthalmic Advisor for the Harvard Medical School’s AIDS Initiative in Vietnam (HAIVN) CMV Retinitis Project from 2009 to 2012.
Dr Stephen Teoh Charn Beng is currently a Senior Consultant and the Head of the Uveitis service at Tan Tock Seng Hospital, having previously served as the Head of Research. He has been invited to speak at various national and international conferences and has authored over 50 peer-reviewed articles. His primary scientific interests are in HIV ophthalmology and infectious uveitis. He is the recipient of multiple national and local awards totaling more than $1.5 million and is involved in several pharmaceutical trials and collaborative clinical research projects with A*Star, SERI, NTU, and other Singapore-based restructuring hospitals. He is currently a Clinical Senior Lecturer at NUS’s Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine and formerly served as Clinical Faculty for the University of Manchester–Singapore Polytechnic Optometry Qualification Program. Dr Stephen Teoh Charn Beng regularly teaches to residents and peers at public symposia, Nanyang Polytechnic, and the Ophthalmology National Continuing Medical Qualification lectures.
