Biography

Dr. Stephen Chang is a General Surgeon practicing at Freer Park Hospital and Freer Park Medical Centre, Singapore. He specializes in laparoscopic surgery, gallbladder management, liver and pancreatic diseases, and liver transplantation.

Dr. Chang received his MBBS and MBBS from the National University of Singapore (NUS) in 1994 and his MSc (Surgery) in 2000 from the National University of Singapore. After becoming a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, the UK in 2003, he furthered his training in Laparoscopic Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Surgery and Liver Transplantation in Paris, France. Dr. Chang was a principal developer of the laparoscopic approach to the liver and pancreatic surgery and was active in developing the Live Donor Liver Transplant (LDLT) program. He was also a pioneer in Single Incision Laparoscopic Surgery (SILS) and was the first of the few to publish his expertise in Single Incision Laparoscopic Gallbladder Surgery, Hepatectomy, and Pancreatectomy. Dr. Chang is the founding president of the Hepatopancreatobiliary Society in Singapore and Associate Professor at the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine at NUS. Apart from his practice at Freer Park Hospital, he is also a Senior Visiting Consultant of the Department of Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Surgery, University Surgical Cluster at National University Hospital (NUH). Academically, Dr. Chang’s research interests include not only clinical research but also the development of basic science and medical technology (Medtech). He has received numerous research grants totaling more than $7 million to develop new surgical techniques and treatment methods through medical technology initiatives. He has extensive publications in both clinical and Medtech research and has since filed 5 patents in these areas. Through these endeavors, he hopes to improve patient care. Dr. Chang’s specialty interests include diseases of the gallbladder, liver, pancreas, gastrointestinal tract, abdomen, and laparoscopic single-incision scar surgery.
