Professional Statement
Dr Smita Praveen is the Director of Academics, the Deputy Director of General Ophthalmology, and the Senior Consultant of Neuro-Ophthalmology at Sankara Nethralaya in Chennai, India.
Over 800 postgraduate students have been trained in cataract surgery and comprehensive clinical ophthalmology by her. She led a group of 40 people to work seamlessly as part of an outreach campaign to provide quality eye care as the Director of the Department of Community Ophthalmology (2002-2006).
She has incorporated novel ideas such as Question of the Week and Eye-Q to enhance engagement between students and consultants while also disseminating information in an immersive and engaging manner. She was a member of the faculty at Elite School of Optometry, where she specialized in Neuro-ophthalmology.
She is the recipient of the Association of Community Ophthalmologists in India’s Pushpa Rani Pattanayek award for excellence in community service (2014-15). (ACOIN).
Her research interests include optic nerve regeneration, diplopia, quality of life in neurodegeneration patients, and educating Postgraduates and Fellows in advanced clinical ophthalmology.
