Professional Statement

Dr Ronnie Jacob George received his medical Qualification in 1994 from St John’s Medical College in Bangalore, and his diploma in ophthalmology in 1998 from Christian Medical College Vellore.

MS (Ophthalmology) from Christian Medical College Vellore in 2001, as well as a Diploma from the National Board of Examinations (DNB) in 2001. He is currently a Senior Consultant in the Medical Research Foundation’s glaucoma section.

He has 52 papers published in peer-reviewed, indexed national and international journals. As an invited guest speaker, he has given over 70 lectures at various conferences.

He was a clinical investigator for the population-based epidemiology studies The Chennai Glaucoma Study and The Chennai Glaucoma Follow Up Study, and he is now an Associate Investigator for the “Chennai Eye Disease Incidence Study.” In addition to postgraduate and fellowship training in ophthalmology, he is a faculty member for Elite School of Optometry, Chennai, and BITS, Pilani distance Qualification programs in optometry.

The Dr MGR Medical University awarded him the Thiru CK.Kumaraswamy Gold Medal for MS Ophthalmology. In 2001, he received the Thomas Gold Medal from Christian Medical College Vellore for the best outgoing postgraduate in ophthalmology.

At the XIIIth Annual Glaucoma Society Of India meeting in 2003, he won the Pfizer best paper award for best research work presented. He was awarded the Ruby Banik award for the best researcher by the Vision Research Foundation in Chennai, the Dr TLK Row Endowment award for best Associate Consultant Medical Research Foundation in 2006, and the Elite School of Optometry’s Best Junior Faculty Award in 2006.

Dr Ronnie Jacob George also serves on the World Glaucoma Association’s (AIGS) Associate Advisory Board and is the President of the Glaucoma Society of India.

Glaucoma epidemiology, optic nerve head analyzers, angle-closure glaucoma, and glaucoma genetics are all areas of concern.
