Clinical Professor Melissa Teo finished her general surgical training in Singapore and was awarded two fellowships in Surgical Oncology and Colorectal Surgery through the MOH Health Manpower Development Program, where she developed her expertise in Complex Abdominal and Pelvic Surgery. Following that, she returned to Singapore and was quickly promoted to Senior Consultant and Head of the Division of Surgical Oncology at the National Cancer Centre Singapore (NCCS). She co-chaired the NCCS Sarcoma and Melanoma workgroups and was a member of the NCCS Cancer Service Line’s Gastrointestinal Tract workgroup, where she helped write treatment guidelines for these tumors. She formerly served as the Director of Strategic Initiatives for the Oncology Academic Clinical Program and as the Chair of the NCCS’s New Building Committee. Additionally, she served as the Vice-Chair for Faculty Affairs and Professional Development at SingHealth’s ACP Surgery.
Dr Melissa Teo occupied numerous leadership positions and pursued clinical excellence, as well as clinical research and teaching, while working in a public institution. She has served as the lead investigator on over 60 IRB-approved research and produced over 180 peer-reviewed publications and six book chapters. She has also received various honors, including the SingHealth Service Excellence Award, the Outstanding Faculty Award – Residency in SingHealth Excels (RiSE) in 2018, and the Outstanding Faculty Award – DukeNUS Medical School in 2016.
Dr Melissa Teo is an outspoken advocate for the advancement of cancer care in Singapore and a member of the Singapore Society of Oncology. Additionally, she serves on the Singapore Cancer Network’s Sarcoma Guidelines Committee and previously served on the Ministry of Health’s Technology Advisory Committee. She maintains an appointment as an Adjunct Professor at DUKE-NUS Medical School.
As a surgical oncologist, her mission is to improve cancer care in Singapore and the region by increasing patient awareness of the disease and its management, contributing to the development of guidelines, pushing the boundaries of cancer management in her areas of expertise, and teaching the next generation of surgical residents, clinical fellows, and medical students.
Dr Melissa Teo accepts referrals for all types of cancer, with particular emphasis on colorectal and gastrointestinal malignancies, sarcoma, and melanoma.
