Dr Meenakshi S received her M.B.B.S. from Madras Medical College in 1988 and her M.S. (Ophthalmology) from the Postgraduate Hospital of Medical Qualification and Research (PGIMER) in 1992.
In 1994-95, she completed a research fellowship in Cornea at the University of Texas at Houston. She then completed a mandatory Transitional Year Residency program at Kettering Medical Center in Dayton, Ohio, followed by a three-year Ophthalmology residency program at the University of Louisville in Kentucky, USA, which she completed in 2000.
Dr Meenakshi S then completed a one-year fellowship in Paediatric Ophthalmology and Adult Strabismus at the University of Iowa, in an AAPOS-certified fellowship program directed by Drs. William E. Scott and Ronald Keech. In 2002, she passed the American Board of Ophthalmology exam.
Since October 2001, she has worked as a consultant in the department of Paediatric Ophthalmology at Sankara Nethralaya. She has been the Director of Academics at Sankara Nethralaya since April 2006, and she is closely involved with the academic programs for postgraduates and optometry students.
Since August 2003, she has served as the training coordinator for the Sankara Nethralaya ORBIS Paediatric Ophthalmology fellowships. She is the Editor of the Medical and Vision Research Foundation’s Scientific Publication “Insight.”

She has a number of national and international peer-reviewed publications to her name. She has also given a number of invited lectures. Vision Growth, Cortical Visual Impairment, and Paediatric Neuro-ophthalmology are among her research interests, as are Community Paediatric Ophthalmology, Adult Strabismus, Genetic Disorders, Continuing Ophthalmic Qualification, and Ophthalmic Postgraduate Qualification.
