She got her fellowship diploma from the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and graduated from the National University of Singapore (NUS). Then, at the National University Hospital and Tan Tock Seng Hospital, she completed her advanced surgical training.

Dr Lau Chien Li Cheryl’s expertise covers hernias, diagnostic and surgical endoscopies, colorectal cancer and benign colorectal diseases, complicated perianal conditions, and bowel disorders in minimally invasive colorectal and general surgery procedures.

In 2011, the Ministry of Health granted her the Human Manpower Development Programme. At the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in the US, Dr Lau completed a year of advanced colon and rectal surgery preparation. She became well-versed in the endoscopic and surgical treatment of diseases of the colon, rectum and anus during her fellowship.

Currently, Dr Lau is an international member of both the American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons Society and the American Colon and Rectal Surgeons Society.

Dr Lau Chien Li Cheryl was a founding member of the colorectal surgery division and the surgical trauma lead at Ng Teng Fong General Hospital as one of the surgeons for the Jurong Health campus (National University Health Services) (NTFGH). She regularly engaged in hospital preparation and chaired, among others, the peer review-learning, morbidity clinical audit and electronic medical records governance committees of the general surgery division. Dr Lau was also appointed chief surgeon and led the hospital to the Ministry of Health Emergency Preparedness Mass Casualty exercise in 2018 to its earliest successful completion.

Dr Lau Chien Li Cheryl, who was passionate about training the next generation of surgeons, was the director of the Surgery-in-General Residents residency program and the lead research director for NTFGH surgery. Currently, she is a clinical lecturer at Yong Loo Lin Medical School, NUS.

She is also an instructor for the Advanced Trauma Life Support Course and a tutor for the Royal Colleges of Surgeons Viva National Fellowship of Training Surgeons Course. She was awarded the Dean’s Award for Excellence in undergraduate teaching and the JurongHealth Campus Best Teacher (Surgery) Award.

In 2015 and 2017, Dr Lau earned hospital research grants for clinical quality research. She has also published several research papers and book chapters, including 2 publications in the prestigious Annals of Surgery Journal, and for several foreign journals, she is an invited reviewer.

Dr Lau Chien Li Cheryl has won annual awards for her clinical treatment, including Service Ambassador awards from 2012-2016 and Service Quality Champion in 2017, putting patient-centered care as her mission. She believes in comprehensive patient care and in giving her patients better results.
