Dr Lai Jiunn Herng is a general surgeon practicing in Singapore at Mount Elizabeth Hospital. He specializes in colorectal surgery, proctology and endoscopy. His sub-specialties include minimally invasive and robotic colorectal surgery, advanced endoscopy, pile and anal fistula surgery and new techniques.

Dr Lai Jiunn Herng uses minimally invasive methods to treat colorectal cancer, including advanced laparoscopic and robotic-assisted colorectal resections, single-port laparoscopy, and trans-anal endoscopic operations. Endoscopic mucosal resection, advanced pelvic surgery, colonic stenting, and complex anal fistula surgery are also included in his repertoire.

Dr Lai Jiunn Herng graduated from the National University of Singapore (NUS) in 1998 with a Bachelor’s Qualification in Medicine and Surgery. In 2004, he graduated from the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and obtained a Master of Medicine in Surgery from NUS in 2005. He completed his advanced surgical training and in 2009 he was awarded the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh
Fellowship. He was also involved in receiving a Laparoscopic Surgery Diploma from the University of Strasbourg, France in 2010. At the University of Hong Kong, Queen Mary College, Dr Lai completed a Health Manpower Development Program (HMDP) fellowship in laparoscopic colorectal surgery in 2012.

Dr Lai Jiunn Herng spent 18 years in the public sector and was a consulting surgeon at the Singapore General Hospital’s Department of Colorectal Surgery. He was in the advanced laparoscopic and robotic surgery team that led the colorectal surgery training and development of minimally invasive techniques. Dr Lai updated endoscopy privilege and preparation standards for SingHealth specialists and surgical residents as a member of the SingHealth-SGH Endoscopy Privileging Harmonisation Committee.

Passionate about surgical and endoscopic simulation training, Dr Lai was the platform director of the DukeSingHealth Surgical Simulation Centre Endoscopy Platform, where he arranged and conducted local and regional participants’ endoscopic simulation courses. As an instructor in simulation-based surgical and critical care team preparation, he has advanced certification.

At the NUS Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, Duke-NUS Graduate Medical School, and the SingHealth General Surgical Residency Programme, Dr Lai held appointments in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching.

Dr Lai Jiunn Herng is a faculty member of the group of Asia Pacific Endo-Laparoscopy Surgery (APELS) and is actively involved in twice-yearly lower gastrointestinal endo-laparoscopic workshops where he teaches Asia-Pacific surgeons. At the Duke-NUS Graduate School of Medicine Surgical Programme, he is a part-time mentor for undergraduate medical students. He is also a licensed teacher in Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and regularly teaches up-to-date ACLS skills to physicians.

Dr Lai Jiunn Herng is the immediate past president of the Singapore Society of Colorectal Surgeons (SCRS). He sits on the board of directors of the organization Asia Pacific Endo-Laparoscopy Surgery (APELS) and is actively involved in the Asia Pacific region’s endo-laparoscopic workshops and teaching. He is a life-long member of the Asian Endoscopic and Laparoscopic Surgeons (ELSA), with an interest in teaching abdominal and laparoscopic surgery techniques to surgeons in developing countries.

Dr Lai is actively interested in educating the public. He sits on the Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month (CCAM) committee for the Singapore Cancer Society, which conducts year-round activities to educate the public on colorectal cancer and perform cancer screening. Since 2007, he has been actively organizing public talks for the Singapore Cancer Society. Dr Lai is one of the regular speakers for the Brahm Centre charity, concentrating on nutritional and digestive wellbeing topics.

Since 2009, he has been organizing cancer treatment workshops and lectures for colorectal cancer patients as an adviser to the SGH Colorectal Cancer Support Group. As the doctor in attendance at the Quarterly Bowel Meetings arranged by the cancer support community, he is active in cancer survivor therapy and rehabilitation.
