  • Dr Johnson Tan Choon Hwai is an ophthalmology specialist. In 2002, he earned his MBBS from the National University of Singapore. He was awarded fellowships by the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (Ophthalmology), the Royal College of Ophthalmologists (UK), and the Singapore Academy of Medicine upon completion of his specialised studies. At his Ophthalmology Exit Exams, he was named Best Candidate in Corneal and Refractive Surgery, Glaucoma, and Neuro-ophthalmology. He continued his cornea and refractive surgery sub-specialist training with Professor Simon Holland at the University of British Columbia, Canada, as a recipient of a MOH training scholarship. He then completed a residency at Miami’s famous Bascom Palmer Eye Hospital. He presently holds the position of Adjunct Associate Professor at Lee Kong Chian (LKC) School of Medicine.
  • Prior to joining Raffles Hospital, Dr Johnson Tan Choon Hwai worked at TTSH as a Senior Consultant and Deputy Head of the Cornea and Refractive Surgery SubExpert In, where he developed his clinical and Qualificational skills. He has held a variety of positions throughout the years, including member of the Singapore Eye Bank’s advisory board, examiner for undergraduate and master’s level examinations in ophthalmology, and Deputy Chairman of the Clinic Management Committee.
  • Since the foundation of the LKC School of Medicine, A/Prof Tan has served as the Principal Lead for Ophthalmology. Along with developing the undergraduate curriculum for Ophthalmology, he taught successive batches of students, instilling his fundamental practice attitude of providing professional and ethical patient care at all times. He was active in training medical students from NUS YLL School of Medicine, residents in ophthalmology, and both local and international fellows. He has received multiple awards for his dedication to educating future generations of physicians, including the Dean’s Award for Teaching Excellence at YLL School of Medicine, the Best Teacher award, and the Top 10 Teachers in TTSH. Additionally, he published over ten research publications in peer-reviewed journals and delivered over forty talks at international and regional scientific conferences, gaining him recognition for his accomplishments.
  • Dr Johnson Tan Choon Hwai’s clinical EXPERIENCE YEARS includes Femtosecond “bladeless” LASIK, “no-touch” TransPRK, several types of complex corneal transplantation (DALK, DSAEK, DMEK), pterygium surgery, ocular surface disease and reconstruction, keratoconus, contact lens-related disorders, and dry eyes. His clinical interests include cataract surgery with multifocal and toric intraocular lenses for presbyopia and astigmatism correction.
