Biodata

Dr. Johann Tang is currently a Radiation Oncologist at Farrer Park Hospital, Assistant Professor at the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, National University Singapore; and Honorary Fellow of the Bangladesh College of Physicians and Surgeons (BCPS). Dr. Tang obtained his medical degree from the University of Newcastle, Australia in 1998, and completed his house officer training at the Hunter Area Health Service, Australia before returning to Singapore to start his specialty training in Radiation Oncology at the National University Hospital (NUH). After obtaining his fellowship from the Royal Australian College of Radiologists (FRANZCR) in 2006, Dr. Tang underwent fellowships in breast brachytherapy at the University of Wisconsin and Arizona Breast Cancer Specialist Center as well as prostate brachytherapy, skin and pediatric fellowships at Peter Maccallum Cancer Institute, Australia.

Dr. Tang served at NUH for 18 years from 2001 to 2019. At NUH, Dr Tang’s subspecialty and main research interest included breast, gynecological, brain, and pediatric tumors. He was appointed as Head of multiple divisions that included Breast, Gynae-oncology, Pediatric, and Brachytherapy radiotherapy services. Dr. Tang spearheaded and built up the breast brachytherapy (Accelerated Partial Breast Irradiation APBI), outpatient interstitial image-guided cervical brachytherapy, and pediatric radiotherapy services at NUH, to provide an array of the latest and best treatment options for patients.

Dr. Tang is passionately involved in education and developing the next generation of doctors to better serve the country. His academic office positions include co-chair of the EuroAsia Breast Brachytherapy School, which is an essential arm of the BrachyAcademy Faculty, member of the teaching faculty of the Australian Pediatric Radiation Oncology Special Interest Group, and is also a renowned External Examiner in Radiation Oncology to the Bangladesh College of Physicians and Surgeons.

Dr. Tang was awarded an Honorary Fellowship by the Bangladesh College of Physicians and Surgeons in recognition of his long-standing contribution to the radiation oncology community in Bangladesh. Besides being appointed as Research Director during his tenure at the National University Hospital Radiation Department, Dr. Tang was actively mentoring residents, authored prestigious publications, and was elected referee for international journals. Dr. Tang has won several research prizes and was the holder of several research grants.

Dr. Tang is currently serving as the only Singaporean elected Council Member in international committees such as the Faculty of Radiation Oncology Council, Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Radiologist (RANZCR), Member of the Pediatric Steering Advisory Committee to RANZCR as well as Associate Editor of Journal of Medical Imaging and Radiation Oncology (JMIRO). He was former Vice President of the Chapter of Radiation Oncologists, Academy of Medicine Singapore, and Executive Member of the Singapore Society of Oncology.

Dr. Tang has a vast number of years of clinical experience in Radiation Oncology and is fluent in English, Mandarin, Bahasa Melayu, Bahasa Indonesia, Cantonese, and Hokkien. He has taken care of patients from many regional and overseas regions including Indonesia, Vietnam, Myanmar, China, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, India and Russia.

Dr. Tang is accredited for 3D Conformal External Beam Radiotherapy (3D CRT), Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT), Image-Guided Radiation Therapy (IGRT), Volumetric Arc Therapy (VMAT), Stereotactic Radiosurgery (SRS), Stereotactic Body Radiotherapy (SBRT), Pediatric Radiotherapy, Breast brachytherapy or Accelerated Partial Breast Irradiation (APBI), Gynecology (cervix and endometrial) interstitial imaged guided brachytherapy and Prostate brachytherapy.
