Biodata
Dr Jim Teo Yeow Kwan is a pulmonologist and intensivist at Mount Alvernia and Parkway East Hospitals. He is a board-certified internist, respiratory specialist, and critical care physician with special interests in asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, non-invasive ventilation, and intensive care medicine. He is also a visiting senior consultant at JurongHealth, where he provides specialist respiratory care at Alexandra and Ng Teng Fong Hospitals. He is also the ICU adviser and director at Mount Alvernia Hospital and Fortis Surgical Hospital.
Dr Jim earned a bachelor’s Qualification in 1997 from the National University of Singapore. He completed his training in general medicine in 2003, earning a Master of Medicine (Internal Medicine) and the MRCP(UK). He continued his subExpert In study at Tan Tock Seng Hospital’s (TTSH) Department of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine and was accredited as a Specialist in Respiratory Medicine by the Specialist Accreditation Board in 2007. He then completed a Master of Medicine (Internal Medicine) and the MRCP. Additionally, he spent a year practicing Intensive Care Medicine in Australia’s Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital. He held European Diplomas in Critical Care Medicine and Adult Respiratory Medicine.
Dr Jim was a Consultant in the Department of Respiratory and Intensive Care Medicine at TTSH prior to entering private practice. He oversaw patients in the medical intensive care unit (MICU), including severely ill patients from the 2009 H1N1 pandemic and oncology patients at the John Hopkins Singapore International Medical Centre. He also pioneered the MICU’s first bedside percutaneous tracheostomy, TTSH. Apart from treating ICU patients, he also assisted in the management of patients in the TTSH’s Non-Invasive Unit and Tuberculosis Control Unit in Singapore. Dr Teo received the Courage Star Award in 2003 for his contributions during the SARS pandemic. Additionally, he received the TTSH Excellent Service Award in 2006 and the TTSH 10-Year Service Award in 2009.
Dr Jim enjoys teaching and remains actively involved in the Qualification of future physicians and nurses. He is currently the instructor for Singapore’s Basic Cardiac Life Support, Advanced Cardiac Life Support, and Fundamental Critical Care Support courses. He is a Clinical Teacher at the National University of Singapore, where he teaches medical undergraduates, and an intensive care medicine trainer appointed by the specialist training committee. He served as an instructor for TTSH’s Core Resuscitative Skills Training and the NUH’s Intensive Medicine Course.
Dr Jim now serves on a number of Mount Alvernia Hospital’s medical committees, including the Medical Advisory Board, Quality Assurance, and Continuing Medical Qualification. Additionally, he serves as chairman of the Critical Care Unit and the Operation Theatre Committees. He is also a member of Fortis Surgical Hospital’s Medical Advisory Board and chairs the OT, ICU, and Code Blue Committees.
