Biodata

Dr. James Tan Chung Hui is a highly skilled surgeon who has more than 10 years of experience in sports surgery and exercises medicine. Dr. Tan specializes in treating sports injuries of the knee, shoulder, and elbow joints, as well as cartilage and meniscus surgery. He is also well versed in minimally invasive (key-hole) tendon and ligament repair, joint replacement, and muscle-tendon transfers of the shoulder joint. In addition, he has published several original research articles on the shoulder and knee joint. Dr. Tan has a strong track record in healthcare administration and headed the Khoo Teck Puat Hospital (KTPH) Department of Orthopedic Surgery & Sports Medicine Center (2016-2020). He was a member of the Orthopedic Clinician Workgroup for Revised MedTech Subsidy Framework for Implants, Ministry of Health, and the Co-Chairman of the KTPH Medical Device Committee. He was also the clinician lead for Musculoskeletal Disease, at the Center for Medical Technologies and Innovations (CMTi), National Healthcare Group (NHG). A founding member of the S’pore Shoulder & Elbow Society and a member of the Asian Shoulder & Elbow Group, he has treated athletes from S’pore National Senior and Youth Teams and professional footballers from S’pore Premier League clubs. He is a three-time Service Champion Gold Award winner who received fellowship training in the treatment of Shoulder & Knee injuries, Cartilage, and Tendon Restoration at the Sportsorthopaedie Klinikum Rechts der Isar, Technical University of Munich. Anavid Clinician Innovator, Dr. Tan partners A*Star, Osteopore, Trendlines Medical, and Nanyang Technological University (NTU), seeking breakthroughs in tendon regeneration, surgical implants, techniques, and injury prevention. Dr. Tan is a winner of postgraduate teaching awards and a lecturer at the Women’s Tennis Association Coaches’ Clinic, NTU, and Nanyang Polytechnic. He instructed at Shoulder & Knee Arthroscopy workshops in Singapore, South East Asia, China, South Korea, and India. Besides being the founder of the KTPH Sports Surgery Fellowship Program and the Chairman of the KTPH Shoulder Surgery Course (2017, 2019), he is also the Core Faculty of the Proficiency Evaluation Committee, NHG Orthopedic Surgery Residency Program. Active in scientific research, Dr. Tan is the reviewer for the Journal of Biomechanics, S’pore Medical Journal, and Asia-Pacific Journal of Sports Med, Arthroscopy, Rehab & Technology. He holds concurrent Adj Asst Professorship at the National University of Singapore School of Medicine and Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine. His team was the finalist for the Young Orthopedic Investigator Award in 2015. Dr. Tan graduated from the Faculty of Medicine NUS and obtained a Master of Medicine (Orthopaedics). He is also a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons (Edinburgh). He received further specialist training in the renowned Department of Sportsorthopaedics, Technical University of Munich, Germany, under the tutelage of Professor Andreas Imhoff. He is fluent in English, Mandarin, Hokkien, and Teochew, with partial fluency in Malay & Cantonese. He enjoys golf, swimming, skateboarding, and outdoor running.
