Biodata
Dr Choo Bok Ai earned his undergraduate Qualification in 1998 from the University of Aberdeen in the United Kingdom and completed his postgraduate internal medicine study at the Royal College of Physicians in London in 2002. He finished his specialised training in clinical oncology in 2007 in Birmingham, United Kingdom, and is a Fellow of the United Kingdom’s Royal College of Radiologists. He became a Fellow of the Academy of Medicine Singapore in 2013 and is currently the Chairman of the Radiation Oncology Chapter. Dr Choo served as treasurer of the Singapore Society of Oncology in 2011 and as an Assistant Professor of Medicine at the National University of Singapore’s Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine from 2011 to 2018.
His work encompasses radiation therapy technologies, precision medicine, and the treatment of tumors of the breast, gynecological system, head and neck, skin, and sarcoma. Dr Choo is an expert in the treatment of cancer with IMRT, IGRT, VMAT, RapidArc, SBRT, and SRS. During his career at National University Hospital from 2009 to 2018, he assisted in the establishment of MRI-guided cervical interstitial and intracavity brachytherapy and taught at several postgraduate teaching courses throughout the region.
Dr Choo Bok Ai led three cervical cancer clinical and translational trials and was a co-investigator in nine others. He was successful in obtaining grants from the National Cancer Hospital Singapore, Terry Fox, and the National Medical Research Council Singapore as part of these trials. He has over 25 peer-reviewed publications in medical journals and authored the clinical research chapter in the Encyclopaedia of Radiation Oncology. He is a frequent speaker at local, regional, and worldwide gatherings.
Dr Choo Bok Ai is committed to patient care during the diagnostic process, therapy, and beyond. He founded the NCIS Nasopharyngeal Cancer Patient Support Group in 2010 and launched the Befriender’s peer-to-peer supporting service in 2011. In 2016, he co-founded and served as medical advisor to the Singapore Sarcoma Support Group. He hosts annual public forums to raise cancer awareness and was recognized in 2016 with the Singapore Patient Advocate Award for his work in patient supportive services. He created the Dream Maker program in 2017 to grant terminally ill patients’ wishes. In 2018, he won an honorable mention from the President of Singapore in the Healthcare Humanity award.
He is fluent in English, Malay, Indonesian Bahasa, Mandarin, Cantonese, and Hakka.
