Biodata

Dr Assoc Prof Daniel Ting Shu Wei currently holds the position of Associate Professor in Ophthalmology at Duke-NUS Medical School in Singapore. Graduating as the SingHealth Residency Valedictorian in 2016, he commenced his vitreous fellowship training as an Associate Consultant at the Singapore National Eye Centre.

In 2017, Dr Assoc Prof Daniel Ting Shu Wei was selected as the 2017 US-ASEAN Fulbright Scholar, representing Singapore in a visit to the Johns Hopkins University (JHU) School of Medicine and Applied Physics Laboratory. The purpose was to enhance his knowledge of artificial intelligence, big data analytics, and Phoneemedicine in the field of Ophthalmology.

In collaboration with esteemed eye centers globally, including those in the USA, Mexico, China, Hong Kong, Australia, and Singapore, Dr. Assoc Prof Daniel Ting Shu Wei and his team have successfully developed and validated an innovative artificial intelligence (AI) system using deep learning. This system effectively detects referable diabetic retinopathy (DR), referable glaucoma suspect (GS), and age-related macular degeneration (AMD).

Published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) in December 2017, the study showcases the team’s groundbreaking findings. Dr. Ting has also secured a research grant of approximately USD 1 million from the Singapore National Medical Research Council to implement an AI-integrated system for the national DR screening program.

Beyond DR screening, Dr. Assoc Prof Daniel Ting Shu Wei is actively involved in research on the application of AI and retinal imaging to predict micro- and macro-vascular complications in individuals with diabetes.

Academically, Dr Assoc Prof Daniel Ting Shu Wei demonstrated exceptional performance in clinical, surgical, research, and leadership aspects during his Ophthalmology residency with the Singapore National Eye Centre and SingHealth Duke-NUS Medical School. Over his residency years, Dr Assoc Prof Daniel Ting Shu Wei received a total of nine SingHealth RISE Awards, including the Outstanding Resident Award in 2014 and 2015, the Young Inspiring Resident Award in 2014, the ITE award in 2012, 2013, and 2014, the Young Educator Award in 2013, and Residents’ Committee Award in 2013 and 2014. He was also honored with the Young Innovator Grant and the Singapore General Hospital Young Investigator Award in 2017 for his work in Artificial intelligence and Diabetes Eye Diseases.

In terms of leadership, Dr Assoc Prof Daniel Ting Shu Wei serves as the Chairman of the SingHealth Residents’ Committee, leading over 1000 residents in Qualification, humanitarian, research, and welfare initiatives. As part of the National Health Care Leadership College/ Ministry of Health initiatives, he was nominated as the inaugural SingHealth Ophthalmology Chief Resident in 2015 and received the Outstanding Chief Resident Award in 2016.

Dr Assoc Prof Daniel Ting Shu Wei earned his Ph.D. titled ‘Novel Imaging Technology for Diabetic Retinopathy (DR)’ from the University of Western Australia.
