Professional Statement

Arkalgud Sampath Kumar, a cardiothoracic surgeon, has worked tirelessly to develop low-cost valve repair techniques for the poor. As a result, the cost of valve repair surgery is the most affordable. And, once his new valves are mass-produced, valve replacement can become the least costly of all heart surgeries.

He has performed over 12,000 heart operations and has over 36 years of cardiothoracic EXPERIENCE YEARS . He is one of the country’s leading heart surgeons and is widely regarded as the most accomplished surgeon in heart valve surgery.

The Ross Procedure Sampath Kumar was the first Indian surgeon to implement the Ross technique (described by Dr Donald Ross in 1967). This operation involves replacing diseased aortic and mitral valves with the patient’s own pulmonary valve, and cadaver valves are used to replace the pulmonary valve.

The method of transplanting the valves reduces the cost of valvular surgery dramatically, removes the need for anticoagulants, and offers a longer life. Since its introduction at the AIIMS in 1993 by Dr. Arkalgud Sampath Kumar, this technique has successfully treated nearly 200 patients. Without a tissue valve bank, the Ross procedure would be difficult.

Dr Arkalgud Sampath Kumar established the country’s first state-of-the-art heart valve bank at AIIMS in 1993. In this bank, valves can be kept for up to five years. This center has helped over 900 patients. The Ross technique advanced the field of cardiac surgery.

Sampathkumar is known as Ross II (mitral valve replacement with pulmonary autograft) for successfully performing this procedure for the first time in India in 2000. Valves Manufactured Since 1953, over 150 designs have been successful in giving patients a new lease on life.

They are, however, abnormal in nature, make noise, create clots that necessitate lifelong anticoagulation, reduce life span by 10 to 15 years, and add other hazards. They are pricey. Heart valve replacements made from animal tissue mimic natural valve construction in several respects. These, however, are more costly, less durable, and only suitable for elderly patients.

Dr A Sampath Kumar claims that only a valve resembling the human valve will be effective. He engineered and patented two heart valves that, in appearance and performance, are the closest to natural valves and are constructed from a material that has been tested in human blood circulation for over three decades.

A prototype is now in the works, and he is sure that it will revolutionize valve replacement surgery not only in India, but around the world. Cardiac Surgery Videos He has created digital videos of cardiac surgery, which has gained him the admiration of his peers in medical schools all over the world.

His videos are in high demand as teaching aids right now. Taking his teaching abilities to the next level, he has developed a computer-based teaching software on coronary bypass surgery that is likely to gain worldwide popularity.

Dr Arkalgud Sampath Kumar has been invited to demonstrate his groundbreaking techniques in valvular surgery to Indian and international surgeons at several prestigious centers both in India and abroad. He is regarded as one of the leading instructors in cardiothoracic surgery. He has trained over 80 cardiovascular surgery students from India, who now use his techniques.

Students at the AIIMS received the prestigious Texas Heart Hospital award for undergraduate writing in the field of cardiac surgery with his support in 2003 and 2005. During his early teaching years, he contributed chapters on cardiothoracic surgery to two surgical textbooks.

In 2006, he completed and published a textbook on techniques in cardiac valve surgery. He has written over 150 monographs on different aspects of cardiothoracic surgery in prestigious Indian and foreign journals.

For the past six years, he has been the editor of the Indian Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery. Thoracic Park Sampath Kumar is also one of the few medical professionals who fully supports patients’ rights, especially the right to knowledge, choice, and compassionate treatment.

Dr Arkalgud Sampath Kumar has written a book on the rights of patients. In his book Thoracic Park, he has also written about his unique encounters with his patients as well as his own learning EXPERIENCE YEARS s and processes.
