Professional Statement

PBrig Gen Prof Dr Md Azizul Islam is one of Bangladesh’s most renowned psychiatrists. He graduated from the Bangladesh College of Physicians and Surgeons with a fellowship. He received advanced training in child and adolescent psychiatry at the National Hospital of Mental Health and Neuroscience (NIMHANS) in Bangalore, India. Apart from that, he received several professional and academic trainings both at home and abroad. He was given Fellowship from the Royal College of Physicians (FRCP) and Fellowship from the American College of Physicians for his excellent contributions to the area of mental health services in the nation (FACP).

In 1986, he was commissioned into the Bangladesh army medical corps. He has been tireless in his efforts to raise awareness and eradicate the stigma associated with mental illness. His work on stress management is well recognized both at home and internationally.

Brig Gen Prof Dr Md Azizul Islam is a frequent contributor to national newspapers on mental health issues. He has over 30 articles in national and international medical journals and 50 publications in national dailies, weekly newspapers, and health magazines to his credit. He authored two Bengali books on mental health, ‘Moner Nana Rong O Mono Rog’ and ‘Sishu Kishor Mono Bikash Abong Autism’. He contributes editorials to a number of famous medical magazines.

Apart from general and adult psychiatry, he is particularly interested in child and adolescent psychiatry, particularly autism. He is one of the country’s pioneering child and adolescent psychiatrists. Brig Gen Aziz is now employed as a Professor and Head of the Department of Psychiatry at the Armed Forces Medical College, as well as a Psychiatrist Adviser at the Combined Military Hospital in Dhaka Cantonment.

He is presently available as a Consultant in Psychiatry at Square Hospital.
