In Singapore, Dr Kum Cheng Kiong is a renowned surgical oncologist (cancer surgeon). His Mount Elizabeth Novena Hospital Centre for Screening and Surgery specialises in the screening and treatment of various cancers such as breast, colon, stomach, thyroid, etc. Its slogan is ‘Screening Saves Lives’ and claims that cancer should be diagnosed early as the survival rate can be more than 90 percent in such cases. Dr Kum Cheng Kiong specializes in the use of minimally invasive approaches to cancer healing (key-hole surgery).
Dr Kum Cheng Kiong is a pioneer of robotic surgery and minimally invasive surgery (laparoscopic surgery) in Asia. He has considerable EXPERIENCE YEARS in the field of gallstone laparoscopic surgery, hernia and weight control.
In 1994, to train in Advanced Laparoscopic Surgery, he won the Health Manpower Development Plan Scholarship to Cologne, Germany. In 1996, he also became a Fellow at the Cleveland Clinic, USA. Since then, in more than 10 countries, he has given live presentations of complex laparoscopic surgery operations and has been invited to speak at more than 50 international conferences. He has also written more than 60 articles and 7 book chapters in peer reviewed journals. From 1997 to 2002, he was also the head of the Singapore International Foundation Laparoscopic Surgery Specialist Team for Vietnam.
Dr Kum Cheng Kiong was an Associate Professor of Surgery at the National University of Singapore before Mount Elizabeth and Gleneagles Hospitals joined him in 2003. He is the immediate past president of the Endoscopic and Laparoscopic Surgeons of Asia (ELSA) chapter in Singapore and was also the President of Congress for the 10th Asia Pacific Endoscopic Surgery Congress in Singapore in August 2011. The Congress won the Asia’s Best Organization Conference Award
