Professional Statement
Dr Rakesh Kapoor is the Medical Director of Medanta Lucknow as well as the Director of the Division of Urology and Kidney Transplant. He won the Hewitt Gold Medal and the PMS Association Gold Medal (1979) for obtaining the highest marks in MBBS, and the Babu Kanshi Ram Dhawan Gold Medal (1984) for being in the order of merit in M.S. (General Surgery) from the erstwhile King George Medical College in Lucknow. He entered the prestigious Sanjay Gandhi Post Graduate Hospital in 1988 as a faculty member in the Department of Urology after receiving his M.Ch. in Urology from PGIMER, Chandigarh.
Dr. Kapoor is a pioneer in the area of healthcare and administration and has served on the World Health Organization’s Sub-committee on Women’s Health (1998). In 1999, he was awarded the “JICA Fellowship in Urology” (Japan), the “Chakraborty Travelling Fellowship” by the Indo-American Urologic Association, and the “Endo-Urology Society Fellowship” by the Endo-Urology Society (USA). Fellowship of the National Academy of Medical Sciences, India (FAMS-2005) and Fellowship of the National Academy of Sciences, Allahabad (FNASc – 2007) have been bestowed upon him.
Dr Rakesh Kapoor was instrumental in the establishment of the Renal Transplant Program as well as the cadaveric transplant program in North India as Head of the Department of Urology since 2006. He discussed a variety of urological laser technologies, including the KTP laser for prostate surgery and the holmium laser for prostate and stone diseases. He also played a key role in the establishment of SGPGIMS’ Paediatric Urology, Female Reconstructive Urology, and Laparoscopic and Robotic Surgeries, which are the first of their kind in North India. SGPGI has performed over 2700 kidney transplants and 1200 laparoscopic donor nephrectomies under his leadership.
The prestigious Vigyan Gaurav Samman (2009), Vigyan Ratna Samman (2010), Yash Bharti Samman (2016), and Dr BC Roy National Award for Eminent Teacher have all been bestowed upon Dr Kapoor (2017). He resigned voluntarily from his positions as Director of the Sanjay Gandhi Post Graduate Hospital and HOD Urology and Renal Transplantation, where he made important contributions to the institution’s mission of providing innovative, high-tech, and multi-disciplinary health care services.
