Dr Chia Whay Kuang John is a surgical oncologist working at Singapore’s Mount Elizabeth Novena Hospital.
His interests include the treatment of ovarian, endometrial, cervical, breast and colorectal cancers, as well as rare tumors such as melanoma, uterine sarcoma, and tumors of germ cells.
Dr Chia undertook his postgraduate fellowship in 2008 in the field of solid tumor immunotherapy, in particular in the development of dendritic cancer vaccines, adoptive T cell therapy and cancer immune biomarker monitoring. He completed a second fellowship in the advanced treatment of gynaecological cancers at The Royal Marsden Hospital in London in 2011 and 2012.
Dr Chia Whay Kuang John was the former head of the oncology section of gynaecology in the Medical Oncology Division at the Singapore National Cancer Centre. He is also a member of the founding board of the Singapore Gynecologic Cancer Association and the Chairman of its Scientific Subcommittee. He is also a board member of the Academy of Medicine’s College of Clinical Scientists, Singapore, and an associate professor at DUKE-NUS Medical School.
He sits on the International Aspirin Foundation’s scientific board and lectures extensively in Japan, Korea, HK, China and the United Kingdom, as well as in Germany, Australia and ESMO Asia. He is also an advisor to many biotechnology and pharmaceutical firms, advising them on the development of new therapeutics and cancer immunotherapy.
Dr Chia Whay Kuang John sits on the Women’s Gynaecological Cancer Awareness Committee of the Singapore Cancer Society and has helped write the guidelines for ovarian and uterine cancer treatment in Singapore (SCAN).
Dr Chia Whay Kuang John is also a member of the Singapore Society of Oncology (SSO) Executive Committee and its Cancer Immunotherapy Consortium, which aims to facilitate access, recruitment, and immune monitoring and toxicity control in Singapore for patients receiving immunotherapy.
Dr. Chia is highly involved in research in clinical trials, and has developed several research protocols and studies for ovarian, cervical, colorectal, nasopharyngeal, and breast cancer.
He was also actively interested in the then nascent field of solid cancer immunotherapy early on in his career, and was deeply involved in the leadership and development of 7 clinical trials of immunotherapy in Singapore.
He has been widely published in leading international journals and holds several grants in excess of $10,000,000 in local and international research for clinical research investigating immune control point inhibitors, cancer vaccines, T cell therapy, aspirin chemoprevention, and cancer small molecule inhibitors.
In 2010, at the European Society of Medical Oncology, Milan (among several thousand submissions), and more recently at ESMO Asia 2017, he was named ‘Best Poster’ for a tumour-specific cancer vaccine trial for his clinical trial in aggressive ovarian cancer.
