EXPERIENCE YEARS

  • Dr Tho Kam San graduated from the National University of Singapore in 1985 and was accepted as a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons (Edinburgh) in 1989, earning a Master of Medicine (Surgery) in the process. He later passed the Foreign Medical Graduates Examination (FMGEMS), followed by the Orthopaedic Surgery Exit Certification Examination in 1995 and was elected a Fellow of the Singapore Academy of Medicine in 1996.
Dr Tho Kam San is also a certified Advanced Trauma Life Support teacher. Dr. Tho has been invited to lecture on a variety of sports medicine-related topics both locally and globally. He has also authored several publications in international and national journals, focusing on knee ligament injuries in particular.
Dr Tho Kam San is an active participant in the management of professional athletes and previously served as team physician for the national soccer team and S-League teams. Ligament injuries around the knee, ankle, and shoulder account for a sizable portion of his practice. The majority of accidents can be treated without surgery using antibiotics, injections, and physiotherapy. Joint lubricant injections in the knee or ankle joints can significantly minimize discomfort and swelling, allowing many athletes and soccer players to return to action. When required, these ligaments can be repaired or reconstructed arthroscopically. Anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction, posterior cruciate ligament reconstruction, meniscus repair, shoulder joint ligament reconstruction for chronic dislocation, rotator cuff repair, and joint debridement of the knee, shoulder, hip, and ankle are all common arthroscopic procedures. In older patients with badly damaged joints, total joint replacement and uni-condylar knee replacement, as well as shoulder and hip replacement procedures, are performed. Dr. Tho is also involved in a number of different sporting organizations and bodies.
  • He is also an ardent sports fan. Dr. Tho is also a Kwok Foundation Scholar. Dr. Tho received a Ministry of Health HMDP Scholarship in 1993 to study at the Karolinska Hospital’s Department of Sports Orthopaedic Surgery in Stockholm, Sweden.
Dr. Tho’s areas of expertise include sports orthopaedics, knee and hip replacement, and total joint replacement.
