Biography

Dr. Shim Hang Hock is a gastroenterologist with a subspecialty interest in inflammatory bowel diseases (IBDs) such as ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease and digestive cancer screening. A firm believer in holistic, patient-centered care, Dr. Shim’s dedication, and service excellence have earned him several service awards throughout his career.

Prior to private practice, Dr. Shim practiced clinical gastroenterology and general hepatology at Singapore General Hospital (SGH), where he served as Director of the Center for Inflammatory Bowel Diseases, where he remains a visiting consultant today. Dr. Shim was also a designated Adjunct Assistant Professor at the Duke-NUS School of Medicine.

Dr. Shim obtained his Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) from the University of Southampton, the UK in 2007 and was accredited as a specialist in gastroenterology in 2015. In 2016, he received the Healthcare Workforce Development Program Fellowship (HMDP) of Singapore. The Ministry of Health will receive an advanced fellowship under the tutelage of Professors Remo Panaccione and Cynthia Seow in the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at the University of Calgary, one of the largest IBD units in the world. In addition to clinical work, Dr. Shim is also an avid scholar who has published numerous peer-reviewed articles and book chapters in high-impact medical journals. He has also been a guest reviewer for several medical journals and was closely involved in multiple clinical trials. These reflect his clinical experience in the field of IBD, especially when it comes to the management of patients with complicated illnesses, the use of novel therapies, and pregnancy in conjunction with IBD. Dr. Shim serves on several medical advisory boards and is regularly invited as a lecturer/speaker at both local and regional medical conferences. During his tenure at SGH, he also contributed to colorectal cancer screening and small intestine service. Dr. Shim’s specialty interests are capsule endoscopy, colon cancer screening, general gastroenterology, hepatology, inflammatory bowel disease, small bowel enteroscopy, and therapeutic endoscopy.
