Biography

Dr. Sharon Koh is a colorectal surgeon who specializes in colorectal surgery, minimally invasive surgery, and advanced endoscopy.

Prior to private practice, Dr. Koh was the former Director of Endoscopy at Alexandra Hospital where she was involved in the planning and operation of the Endoscopy Center from 2018 to 2020. She is currently a Senior Clinical Lecturer at the National University of Singapore (NUS) Young Loo Lin School of Medicine. Dr. Koh graduated from the National University of Singapore with MBBS, MBBS, and MD in Surgery. She completed her advanced surgical training at both the National University Hospital and Singapore General Hospital and obtained her Fellowship Diploma from the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, the UK in 2013. She also received her accreditation as a Specialist in General Surgery in 2014. Dr. Koh completed an 18-month fellowship in advanced colorectal surgery with a special focus on Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) under the supervision of Professor Philip R. Fleshner along with a team of 10 colorectal surgeons at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, US after Received the Medical Academic Development Award (AMDA) from the National University Hospital of Singapore. Apart from clinical work, Dr. Koh has also published several peer-reviewed research papers in the journals Inflammatory Bowel Disease and Annals of Surgery and has presented her research at several international conferences. She also received a research grant from the International Organization for Inflammatory Bowel Diseases (IOIBD) in 2014. Dr. Koh’s other interests include endoscopic management of both benign and malignant lesions of the gastrointestinal tract for which she has published papers and a book chapter. She spent time under Professor Hironori Yamamoto locally and in Jishei, Japan during her years of training at NUH to develop her skills in both diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy. She is currently a member of the Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons of Singapore and an international member of the European Society of Colon and Rectal Medicine and has participated in several GlobalSurg collaborative cohort studies from 2018 to 2020.

Dr. Koh believes in extending medical care beyond the confines of a hospital. She was part of the SOUL Committee (Surgical Communication for the Underprivileged) in 2011 to 2012 and was part of the medical support team for the F1 Grand Prix from 2008 to 2011. Having been involved in the Department of Health’s Value-Driven Care (VDC) project for hemorrhoidectomy, she believes that can be achieved Both comprehensive and quality care when they put patient welfare at the heart of their service.

Dr. Koh’s interests lie in colorectal surgery, diagnostic and therapeutic endocrinology, inflammatory bowel disease, and MIS surgery.
